Scope and Contents

The collection of Clarie Collins Harvey consists of a nine-part series arranged according to the various activities in which she was involved. Correspondence is interspersed throughout the first five series; the largest amount is in the first series , her personal papers, and is arranged chronologically. Church activities, civic activities, higher education, and business ventures comprise the next four series arranged alphabetically. The next two series are collected writings and collected items, also arranged alphabetically. The last two series are news clippings and oversized materials.

The collection measures a total of 38.46 linear feet. The total correspondence is housed in 12 boxes, with nine of those from the first series, with the rest housed in the church activities, civic activities, and higher education series. Notable correspondents include: U.S. Senator Birch Bayh, Medgar W. Evers, Dorothy I. Height, Bishop Robert E. Jones, Coretta Scott King, Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus, U.S. Senator Eugene McCarthy, Virginia Naeve, Benjamin Quarles, Sargent Shriver, and Robert Penn Warren.

The non-correspondence materials include Harvey's personal papers, photographs, scrapbooks, plaques and awards, writings, and documents of her involvement with various church and civic activities, higher education, and business ventures. Collected items include writings and publications dealing with the varied interests of Harvey, such as civil rights, peace activism, women's issues, and world viewpoints.
