Vanessa Murphree oral history collection
Scope and Contents
This small oral history collection contains interviews done by Vanessa D. Murphree in 2001 and 2002 with members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Interviews focus on SNCC's use of public relations and communications for the promotion of civil rights. To this end, Murphree interviews members of SNCC's Communications Department, Research Department, and Executive Committee to discuss specific tools and strategies used in their messaging and direct actions.
The collection contains four sound recordings of Jack Minnis, the founder and director of opposition research for SNCC; Jane Stembridge, SNCC staff; Constance Curry, advisor on the executive committee of SNCC, and Mary King of SNCC's communications department. The collection also includes incomplete transcripts of these interviews in addition to a telephone interview with Dorothy Miller Zellner, a volunteer who worked with Julian Bond on SNCC's newspaper, The Student Voice. The collection mainly documents the topic of SNCC public relations during the Civil Rights Movement.
