Content Description

The papers of composer of classical music, performer, and author consist of a copy of her book Indigo Sound (2003), published by SUSAAMI Books, Inc. The papers also include a press kit from the publication, curriculum vitae, articles regarding her participation in a History-Maker’s oral history project, and programs of performances. Lastly, a demo compact disc Regina Harris Baiocchi Live! is included.

The papers also contain correspondence in the form of letters and emails from 1992 to 2004, which concerns Baiocchi’s efforts to place her writing with publishers, as well as letters regarding professional engagements and thank you letters. Also present are contracts, grant/fellowship applications, invitations, programs, posters, news clippings, photographs, and writings by Baiocchi, including an essay on Gwendolyn Brooks. Bound advance reading copies containing revisions and reader comments for her book, Indigo Sound, manuscript drafts of “Sankofa Twin and Other Stories” and "Good News Falls Gently and Other Poems” are present. Additional papers date from 2012 to 2017 focused on the annual Haiku Festival organized by Baiocchi, as well as letters regarding professional engagements in literary, music, and film projects and thank you letters. Also present are contracts, invitations, programs, posters, and writings/compositions by Baiocchi.

Audiovisual materials include nine VHS tapes of performances by Baiocchi or of her work. Flyers and forms for a 2005 Haiku Festival sponsored by Baiocchi, conference materials for the 2005 meeting of the National Association for the Study and Performance of African American Music, as well as production material for Baiocchi’s books, Urban Haiku and Indigo Sound, complete the collection.

Biographical Note

Born July 16, 1956, Regina Harris Baiocchi is a composer of classical music, performer, and author. A music graduate of DePaul University and Roosevelt University, she has also studied design at the Illinois Institute of Technology and public relations at New York University. She is the composer of the opera Gbeldahoven: No One’s Child (1996); and author of poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction, including her first novel Indigo Sound (2003); and currently a writer for Oxford University Press. Since 2000 she has been adjunct humanities professor for East-West University in Chicago. Her compositions have been performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Brass Quintet, and Seattle Philharmonic.
