Content Description

In the late 1960s/early 1970s, Joseph Logsdon, an historian and professor at University of New Orleans, conducted over 30 hours of an oral history interview with New Orleans attorney A.P. Tureaud. The collection is comprised of transcripts for eleven tapes of the interview. During the interview, Tureaud discusses both his personal and professional lives. He discusses African American leadership in New Orleans during the 1920s and the creation of civic leagues within the city. He discusses his education at Howard University’s Law School and his experiences in Washington, D.C. Much of the interview focuses on Tureaud’s legal work and various voting rights and school desegregation cases. Tureaud also discusses his political activities. Individuals and organizations mentioned throughout the interview include: Herbert Christenberry, J. Skelly Wright, and John Minor Wisdom, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Arthur W. Mitchell, Ben C. Dawkins, Leander Perez, Shelby Jackson, deLesseps S.
