Central City Economic Opportunity Corporation (New Orleans, La.)

 Organization

Historical Note

The Central City Economic Opportunity Corporation (Central City EOC) is a non-profit, non-sectarian body founded in 1965 by Total Community Action—one of the Central Action Agencies formed out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 “to better focus the nation’s resources on underprivileged families and individuals in order to help make them more self-sufficient.” The Central City EOC was one of six neighborhood organizations in New Orleans, Louisiana, which in turn ensured that Central City neighborhood residents were participating in anti-poverty programs and benefitting from the services provided through various committees. In 1974, the Central City EOC founded the Central City Senior Center to serve the elderly and in 1999, it began providing childcare to residents through its Head Start Program.

The Central City EOC continues to operate in and serve the neighborhood of Central City by providing social, economic, and health and wellness programs.
