United Clubs Inc.

 Organization

Historical Note

United Clubs Inc., was formed in 1953 in New Orleans, Louisiana, as an umbrella organization for four social aid and pleasure clubs. Led by Leonard Burns, the organization led such projects as the 1957 and 1960 "blackouts" of the Mardi Gras season, during which African Americans were encouraged to boycott Carnival balls and parades in order to divert financial support to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Other efforts on the part of United Clubs included voter registration drives, fundraising, and protests against segregationist practices and laws.
