Biographical Statement

Herreast J. Harrison, educator and founder of the Guardian Institute and the Donald Harrison, Sr. Museum.

Guardian Institute is the administrative arm of the Donald Harrison, Sr. Museum and Legacy Performance Pavilion. The institute founded in 2006 by Herreast J. Harrison to honor her late husband Big Chief Donald Harrison, Sr., focused was on the literacy of youth and New Orleans indigenous cultural arts, West African and New World oral traditions. The museum houses art, music and artifacts, including Mardi Gras Indian costumes of the Harrison family and more specifically Big Chief Donald Harrison, Sr. The Guardian Institute curated exhibitions, seminars, lectures, and performances in New Orleans and abroad.
