Biographical Statement

Felix James was born in Brick County, Georgia but his family moved to New Orleans and settled into the Gert Town neighborhood when he was five. He graduated from McDonough 35 and received his Bachelor’s in Health and Physical Education from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1941. James was assigned to flight school training at Tuskegee Institute (Tuskegee, Alabama). James described microagressions by white officers which manifested into sabotaging black cadets during flight training. Felix detailed the training process for Tuskegee airmen, his failed flight test and his transition from flight school to his training as a medical personnel due to his education in Health. James eventually became the manager of all non-commissioned medical officers for the 332nd fighting group while they served in Italy. After being released from the military in 1945, James became the head football and track coach at Landry High School (New Orleans, Louisiana).
