Biographical Statement

Henry (Harry) B. Dixon and his family lived at 8520 Poplar Street in the New Orleans, Louisiana circa 1878-1922. Dixon owned a bar room with business partner, Frank Polombo in the 7th Ward circa 1895. Dixon married Cecelia Dixon in which the union produced no children. The couple, however, corresponded and maintained a close relationship with a niece Irma Louise Sanders.

The Dixon family involved themselves as members and officers in many local social clubs and benevolent societies, including the Old Folks Friendship Benevolent Association, St. Mary's Benevolent Association, Violet Social Club, Young and True Friends Benevolent Association, the Colored Screwmen's Benevolent Association, the Female Benevolent Association, and the local board of the Thomy Lafon Old Folks Home. Dixon served as president of the Violet Social Club in 1891 and also served as president of the St. Mary's Benevolent Association at the time of his death in 1922. He was survived by his wife who remained in the family home on Poplar Street until she moved to live with her Sander relatives at 8520 Willow Street circa 1932.
