Biographical Statement
Alberta Mary Knox Eatmon (circa 1898-1991) was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to Estella Briggs and William Knox. She attended the Normal School, now the State College of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, graduating in 1916. Eatmon attended Rutgers University and attained a Bachelor of Science degree in education (1931). Knox taught for ten years in the schools of New Bedford and while attending graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, she became a faculty member of the Manual Training School in Bordentown, New Jersey. Eatmon was a faculty member for twenty-nine years at the Manual Training School teaching English, mathematics, American history, and civics. The Manual Training School closed in 1955 and Eatmon joined the faculty at Burlington Junior High School in Burlington, New Jersey and remained there until her retirement in 1961. Following her retirement, she was active in various community service organizations, such as the Young Women's Christian Association and the National Association Advancement of Colored People of New Bedford.
