Biographical Statement

Dr. Alan Wieder is a visiting scholar at Portland State University and former chairman of the Educational Studies Department at the University of South Carolina. He has written extensively on education and desegregation in the American South and in South Africa during Apartheid. He received his B.A. in Social Science from Ohio State University (1971), his M.Ed. from the University of Cincinnati (1973), and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University (1977). His books include: Immigration, the Public School, and the 20th Century American Ethos (1985); Race and Education: Narrative Essays, Oral Histories, Documentary Photography (1997); Voices From Cape Town Classrooms: Oral Histories of Teachers Who Fought Apartheid (2003); and Teacher and Comrade: Richard Dudley and the Fight for Democracy in South Africa (2008). Dr. Wieder has also authored articles related to the desegregation of public schools in New Orleans, Louisiana.
