Biographical Statement

Ulysses H. Jones was a Korean and Vietnam veteran who resided in Massachusetts with his family. He worked in various financial positions prior to retirement and was an active letter writer and documentarian of his life and that of his family.

Ulysses "Les" Herman Jones was born May 20, 1930. Jones graduated from a vocational high school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1945. He joined the U.S. Army in 1947, mastering Spanish and Portuguese during his lengthy service of over twenty years. His tours included Germany, Korea, Vietnam, and 14 other countries. Trained as an Infantryman, he attended the Infantry Center School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Arriving in Korea in September 1950, Jones was later captured and become a Prisoner of War by the North Koreans/Chinese in December 1950. Among the decorations Sgt Jones received during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, were the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, Good Conduct Medal with Five Knots and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

In 1968, Jones enrolled in night classes at Boston University. He majored in accounting and received a BS degree in 1976. He worked in several managerial positions at the former Shawmut National Bank and Trust Company for three years before taking early retirement in 1985. He later worked as a Senior Property Administrator for EG&G (Edgerton, Germeshausen, and Grier, Inc.) before retiring in the early 1990s. He also authored five books, Remembrance Past and Present, The Gift, Lee, Encounter and Reflections under the pseudonym Otterman J. Herman. He was also active in his retirement as a volunteer with Boston Logan U.S.O. and a member of the Catholic Charities North, Adversary Board.

Ulysses Jones married Verelela “Lee” Pomare of Panama and had three children; two sons, Kim L. and Hugh H. and a daughter, Less-Lee. The Jones family lived in Cambridge and Lynn, Massachusetts, before moving to Beverly, Massachusetts, permanently in 1977.
