Biographical Note

Dr. John Daniel Cotman was a chemist for the Monsanto Chemical Corporation in Springfield Massachusetts. He was its first African American chemist for the corporation and later managed a chemical research program at Mobile Chemical Corporation. Born in Boston, he won a full scholarship to Harvard University in 1939 and attained his bachelors degree in chemistry. He later pursued a masters degree and doctorate at Harvard, which he completed in 1950. He was also a World War II Navy veteran.
