Biographical Statement
Florence Borders was a long-term employee of the Amistad Research Center, as well as a scholar actively engaged in promoting New Orleans and South Louisiana culture. She worked at the Amistad Research Center from 1970 to 1989, and then worked as an archivist at the Center for African and African American Studies at Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) from 1989 until her retirement. Prior to working at Amistad, she worked at various library positions since 1946; this includes positions at the University of Chicago, Bethune-Cookman College, Tennessee State University, and Grambling State University. Borders holds a B. A. from Rosary College and Southern University, and she received an M. A. in Library Science from Rosary College. Borders has published articles in Callaloo, the Black Music Research Journal, Chicory Review, and the Louisiana Library Bulletin.
Florence Borders has served as cofounder of the Chicory Society of Afro-Louisiana History and Culture, as Vice President of the Our Lady of Lourdes School Board, and on the grants review committee of the Arts Council of New Orleans, among many other activities. Borders also served as a consultant for the Neighborhood Revitalization Project of the Claiborne Corridor and as a consultant for the Louisiana World Exposition Afro-American Pavilion, among many other positions of community service.
