 Person

Biographical Statement

Born in New Orleans in 1965, trombonist and composer Delfeayo Marsalis is perhaps best known for his production work in contemporary jazz recordings. Along with his father, Ellis, and his brothers Branford, Wynton, and Jason, Marsalis earned a Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2011. A student at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the Tanglewood Institute, and Berklee College of Music, Marsalis is trained in both jazz and classical performance, as well as audio production. He honed his production skills by working on demo tapes for members of his musician family, and he has been producing jazz albums professionally since he was a high school student. He earned a master's in jazz performance from the University of Louisville and a doctorate from New England College. Marsalis has worked with bandleaders such as Max Roach and Elvin Jones, and as a bandleader himself he has released several albums, including Pontius Pilate's Decision and Sweet Thunder. He formed the Uptown Music Theatre and has implemented his Kidstown After School program in three New Orleans elementary schools.
