Biographical Statement

Carl M. Levin was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 28, 1934.  He graduated from Central High School, Detroit in 1952 and continued his education at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1956.  He then attended Harvard Law School in Boston, Massachusetts receiving a law degree in 1959. He was admitted into the Michigan Bar Association the same year.  From 1959 to 1964 he was a partner in the law firm of Grossman, Hyman and Grossman.  During this period he married Barbara Halpern in 1961. Together they have three daughters.

In 1964 he became the assistant attorney general and general counsel for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, serving until 1967. Records for the Civil Rights Commission are housed in the State Archives of Michigan. From 1968 to 1969 he served as the Chief Appellate Attorney for the city of Detroit. In 1968, Mr. Levin was elected to the Detroit City Council, serving from 1969 to 1977, and was president of the City Council from 1973 to 1977.

In 1978 he was elected to the United States Senate and is a ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee as well as other committees.  He was re-elected in 1984, 1990, 1996, 2002, and 2008.
