Biographical Statement

Rex Madsen, a native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, was an award-winning fashion designer. Madsen was well acquainted with the celebrity world through his design of clothes for Pearl Bailey, Anita Vanderbilt, Alice Ghostley, Mildred Bailey, Bess Meyerson, and Millicent Rogers, the Standard Oil heiress. Some of the dresses that Madsen designed were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. During the 1950s, Madsen shared a house on Banks Street with nightclub host and cabaret singer Jimmy Daniels.

Scope and Contents The Rex Madsen and Jimmie Daniels photograph collection documents the life of Jimmie Daniels and his career as a a nightclub host and entertainer during the Harlem Renaissance and into the 1950s and 1960s. The collection measures 1.75 linear feet and is comprised mainly of photographs from circa 1870s-1970s.
