Biographical Statement
Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner was the leader of the Radical Republicans in the senate during the Civil War and Reconstruction. His outspokenness against slavery led to his nearly-fatal assault on the Senate floor by South Carolina Representative Preston Brooks in 1856.

This small collection consists of autographs, correspondence, and images of prominent abolitionists.
