Biographical Statement

The evangelistic preacher J. Gordon McPherson, known and self-proclaimed as the "Black Billy Sunday," was one of the better known African American religious figures in the American West. A veteran of the Spanish-American War, McPherson published the newspaper Voice of the West.

Rev. McPherson lived in New Orleans at various points in his life, where he died in April 1936 and was survived by his widow, Dolly Taylor McPherson.
