Biographical Statement

Joseph Edwin Roy was born in Martinsburg, Ohio, in 1827. He graduated in 1848 from Knox College, and took a position with the American Missionary Association (AMA) in the 1850s with a church in Brimfield, Illinois. In 1855, he was called to lead Plymouth Church in Chicago.

Roy became a district secretary for the Western District of the AMA in 1868, and by 1878 was a field superintendent based in Atlanta. In 1885, he became Western District Secretary for the AMA, and he served in this capacity until his retirement in 1903. He served as chairman of the World's Congress on Africa at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Joseph E. Roy died in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1908.
