Great Negro Americans collection
Content Description
The Great Negro Americans collection consists of 3 phonographic discs: 1 - 12” vinyl (plus duplicate) “Great Negro Americans, Volume One”; 1 - 7” flexi disc “Portraits in Achievement, Volume 1”; and photographs, related fliers and inserts. Great Negro Americans, Volume One appears to have been the only volume produced. It was produced and written by Alan Sands circa 1965 and distributed by Alan Sands Productions from 1970 into the 1980s. The record was narrated by Hilda Simms and Frederick O’Neal. It tells the stories of: Dr. Ralph Bunche (government), John H. Johnson (publishing), Marian Anderson (singer), Jesse Owens (athletics), Charles C. Spaulding (insurance), A. Philip Randolph (labor), Louis Armstrong (music), Mary McLeod Bethune (teacher), Robert A. Cole (business), and Dr. Daniel Williams (medicine). “Portraits in Achievement” was produced by Calvert Distillers Company, N.Y.C. It is also narrated by Hilda Simms and Frederick O’Neal and appears to be an abbreviated version of “Great Negro Americans” created for promotional distribution. It tells the stories of Dr. Daniel Williams and Mary McLeod Bethune.
