Scope and Contents

Among the largest series in the Davis papers are his professional papers encompassing 18.8 linear feet of organizational records. The files consist of correspondence, minutes of meetings, publications, and reports that document Davis’ employment and role with these organizations. The main topics of urban renewal and equality in housing, as well as human and intergroup relations are covered within the files for the Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago (1953-1960), the National Association of Intergroup Relations Officers (1959-1969), the Dixwell Renewal and Redevelopment Project (1962-1965), the Model Urban Neighborhood Demonstration program (1967-1970), the Federal Urban Renewal Administration’s Housing and Home Finance Agency (1957-1965), and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (1963-1995).

The records also extensively document Davis’ work with the Martin Luther King Jr., Center for Nonviolent Social Change (1970-2002) and the establishment and administration of the Martin Luther King Jr., Federal Holiday Commission (1983-2002).
