Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The University and grant files are organized alphabetically by institution or grant title and chronologically within. Included are materials that show Mickens' professional responsibilities at Fisk University and Clark Atlanta University, such as Callaway reports spanning 1985-2009. These reports document Mickens' responsibilities for his endowed professorship. The files also include items related to committee meetings; campus lectures and discussions; and student materials, such as thesis materials and documents related to student research assistants. Of interest are correspondence, travel information, announcements and programs for the many lectures and seminars Mickens presented at universities across the United States, as well as materials related to labs and physics institutes where he conducted research while on leave from teaching. University ephemera is available, mainly from Clark Atlanta and Fisk, including: Fisk Forum newspapers from the 1970s and Clark Atlanta convocation programs and event invitations spanning the early 1980s to 2010. Finally, the grant files show the vast amount of funding Mickens procured from the 1970s to 2000s and includes proposals, correspondence, and reports. The university and grant files in particular show the difficulty and work involved in funding scientific research and show the necessity of grant funding to help augment Mickens' salary at historically black universities.
