Scope and Contents
General correspondence is organized chronologically, while the remaining correspondence is organized alphabetically. Through the outgoing and incoming correspondence, Mickens' dedication to his research and to the advancement of African Americans in scientific fields is evident. Included is correspondence showing Mickens' involvement in Ford Fellows alumni meetings; his work mentoring and speaking to middle and high school students; his selection as a Historymaker: Sciencemaker; and his interest in African American archival collections like Amistad Research Center and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
The scientific correspondence ranges from 1971-2013, with the bulk being from 1990-2010, and includes correspondence with scientists, mathematicians, and students from all over the United States, Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. This particular set of correspondence shows the breadth of Mickens' research and illustrates his constant collaboration with other scientists throughout his career.
The peer-review correspondence shows Mickens regularly reviewed academic journal articles and book manuscripts for his peers for possible publication.
Other materials included at the end of this series consist of family budget books and calendars spanning the late 1970s to 2006, family notes, greeting cards, and other communications from 1980-2012. Mickens' meticulous personal “To-Do” lists, dated from 1970-2010 are included in this series, along with various awards and honors he received over the years.
