 File — Box: 69, Folder: 2

Series Description

From the Series:

This section of files encompasses materials related to Cartwright’s work as a United Nations correspondent for the Pittsburgh Courier starting in 1955. The materials primarily date from the 1960s to 1980. The files contain correspondence, reports, ephemera, publications and newspaper clippings related to the UN General Assembly and other UN programs such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in which Cartwright served as a delegate to the United States Commission; United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR); United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF); and other UN-related conferences. Materials of note include a run of the UNESCO Courier which date from 1955 to 1966.

Cartwright also created subject files and scrapbooks specifically about the UN and individuals involved in the UN. These subject files and scrapbooks include newspaper clipping files that discuss the UN and African Americans working in the UN. Individuals with their own files include Adlai Stevenson II, who served on the committee that created the United Nations; and Ralph Bunche, who was also heavily involved in the formation of the United Nations.

Similarly, the scrapbook about the United Nations contains pamphlets, articles, publications and editorials including an “In Memoriam'' issued after the death of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld in an airplane crash. Other items of note include ephemera, a press kit and correspondence related to the UN Decade of Women Conference in 1985 that Cartwright attended. Other attendees included actress Esther Rolle, feminist leader Betty Friedan and activist Angela Davis.
