Series Description

From the Series:

Papers dedicated to Dr. Cartwright’s work as an educator in three universities and as a guest educator in over two hundred others can be found within this section of files. These materials encompass items related to Cartwright’s career as a lecturer and her work with the University of Nigeria, as well as collected materials that date from 1912 to 1970. She taught a course titled “American Negro Culture” in the school of General Studies at Hunter College in New York. She also taught another course titled “America’s Stake in Africa” at the New School of Social Research.

The papers contain essays and other assignments from her students, as well as Cartwright’s own performance evaluations and note cards containing collected research on a given subject. The bulk of the student work comes from the “American Negro Culture” course. Of note are materials from Cartwright’s sociology and education courses, which include observations of minority children. Cartwright had her students complete minor assignments using 5”x7” note cards; this format represents the bulk of the assignments found in this series of files. Topics covered in these courses are similar to those covered in the subject files in Series 8 which provide more context. This section also contains course catalogs from universities and collected research pertaining to higher education. By invitation from Nigeria’s first president and University of Nigeria founder Nmandi Azikiwe, Cartwright served as a founding trustee on the Provisional Council for the university. It was the first university founded after Nigeria’s independence. The University of Nigeria materials include correspondence, minutes and reports which detail the founding, staffing, administration, organization, financial information and development of curriculum of the university. These materials are primarily compiled into eight scrapbooks. Other members of the Provisional Council include Chairman Dr. T. Olawale Elias and Dr. Okechukwu Ikejiani from the Federation of Nigeria, J.S. Fulton from the United Kingdom, and Dr. Eldon Lee Johnson from the United States. When she donated the papers, Cartwright noted that with the destruction of the physical plant of the University of Nigeria during the Nigerian Civil War, these records were likely the only complete set in existence at that time.
