Series Description

From the Series:

This series contains photographs, oversized materials and audiovisual materials.

Cartwright’s photographs are extensive, encompassing United Nations representatives from member nations and scenes from the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, such as tours of UN headquarters. These photographs are primarily taken by UN photographer George Rowan. Primary subjects include UN Secretary-General U Thant, members of the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) and members of the United States Permanent Mission to the UN. These photographs also document UNESCO’s efforts of fighting malaria and malnutrition in Africa.

Also included are photographs from Cartwright’s extensive travels to Africa, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. The photographs are often contained in scrapbooks, which acted as Cartwright’s travelogues.

This section also includes personal photographs of Cartwright’s family as well as contemporary celebrities. The oversized materials primarily consist of newspapers and magazine articles, as well as ephemera and occasional photographs. Notable items include English- and Xhosa-language newspapers from South Africa from 1976. Also of note are copies of Guyanese newspaper Thunder that date 1957-1963, chronicling the country’s clamor for independence. World War II-era posters and others featuring African-American subjects are included. The United Nations is represented with posters detailing the organizational structure of the United Nations and United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that highlight the Declaration of the Rights of the Child and cultural heritage sites. Other oversized materials include blueprints for the Cartwright residence dated 1953.

Videotapes document entries in Overseas Press Club Competitions. These videos provide a good overview of international journalism from 1975 to 1980. The collection includes 6 hours and 17 minutes of some award-winning deep-dive news features of the era, with a focus on the world economy, social unrest and international relations with the United States. Highlights include coverage of the Iran Hostage Crisis and the plight of Cambodian refugees. While a few of the videos were transferred with a slightly low volume level, they are mostly in great condition.
