Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Photographs in this series represent Yepez’s personal and professional career. Images include family members, friends, photographs of Yepez’s wedding (1948), and various artists exhibiting their work at the gallery. Images are generally arranged in chronological order, then alphabetically by topic, with undated images following. Photographs comprise color and black and white prints dating from circa 1864-1972, with a small number of postcards and negatives documenting landscapes and buildings.

The bulk of the photographs contain images of Yepez’s family members (1864-1925); with Alice and Anne Robinson (1936); with her sister Edythes Robinson (1943-1948); with Clarence, Conrod, “Uncle Frank,” Anne and Dorothy Robinson [Yepez] (1926-1943); with Yepez’s grandmother, Lucy C. Robinson (1919-1930), and black and white and color photographs of Dorothy Yepez (1950-1971). Other images represented within the collection include images of Yepez’s nursing school graduation class (1946), Peruvian music composer Jose Carlos Santos (1965), photographs of gallery events (1958-1959), and one black and white autographed print of Duke Ellington (circa 1966).

Oversized Materials include magazine and newspaper clippings, posters, programs and photographs. The bulk of the oversized materials are scrapbooks. Scrapbooks within the papers include documentation of Yepez’s local and international travels. Included are postcards, memorabilia, programs, travel guides, letters and ticket information from Yepez’s travel to several United States cities: Atlanta, Georgia; New Orleans, Louisiana; Memphis, Tennessee; St. Louis, Missouri; and Burlington, New Jersey. Other scrapbooks encompass items from her international travels to London, Munich, Amsterdam and Rome. Of note within one of her travel scrapbooks is a 1936 report card of Mary Anne Robinson from Wilbur Watts High School (June 18, 1936).

Scrapbooks containing collected newspaper clippings document Yepez’s interest in studying various topics. Subjects include sports, dance, culture, politics, New York politics, education, health, cultural activities, race relations and Puerto Rico. Notable people of interest represented within the scrapbooks are Pearl Baily, Roy Wilkins, Felipe Luciano, Gordon Parks, Della Reese, Mahalia Jackson, Shirley Chisholm, Jim Curtis and Sonny Liston.

Yepez taught art courses about creating greeting cards for the greeting card industry. Of interest are two large scrapbooks containing greeting cards that Yepez used for a teaching project (1971). She prepared greeting cards as examples of her artwork to show to commercial and fine arts artists.

The papers conclude with a unique ephemeral item, a rock for the Urban Renewal Project with a handscript note, “Spring 1974 Edythes House was here Urban Renewal 1974.” Edythes was Yepez’s sister.
