Scope and Contents
The photographs within the collection are both personal and professional in nature documenting Morial’s political, community and civic engagements. These photographs are primarily 5 x 7-inch snapshots, but 8 x 10-inch portraits and Polaroids are also included.
Items of interest include two photographs of a young Dutch Morial with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a visit to New Orleans. Notable items include a small photograph album featuring Morial’s students from her teaching tenure in Boston, Massachusetts, photographs from the Mayor’s Mission to Japan, candid photographs of Dutch and Sybil Morial and their family, and an album containing photographs from the funeral of Dutch Morial. Other items of interest include a snapshot of Sybil Morial and longtime friend Andrew Young, a New Orleans native, American politician, diplomat and activist.
The photographs also include snapshots taken at International Women’s Forum (IWF) events in San Antonio, Denver and New Orleans.
The oversized items include newspapers, magazines and certificates, as well as planners and an address book used by Sybil Morial. There is also a small box of realia including campaign ephemera, such as buttons from Ernest N. “Dutch” Morial’s mayoral campaign.
