 File — Box: 8, Folder: 7

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This section contains materials related to Dr. Pruitt-Logan’s research and reporting regarding the desegregation of higher education involving students, faculty, and other employees. Must of this research was done under the Southern Regional Education Board and the Southern Education Foundation. These organizations reviewed court cases related to the desegregation plans within states such as Adams v. Richardson, a case brought against the federal government by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund on behalf of black college students, citizens, and taxpayers in ten states charging that those states violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for operating segregated systems of higher education.

These records include correspondence, state specific reports on desegregation plans, proposals, quantitative data, and collected reports. Primary correspondents include her colleagues James Upton, James E. Blackwell, and Karim Al-Amin as well as Jane Fairfax, then director of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Notable materials include correspondence regarding Office of Civil Rights employment data tapes that were suspected of being tampered with.
