Scope and Contents

From the Series:

De Veaux’s extensive travels and personal and professional relationships are captured in photographs and related graphic material. This series consists of De Veaux’s photographs, portraits, negatives, photo books, slides, photocopies, and other visual items. The photobooks are from Kromacolor. Photographs range in size and are in black and white or color and include copies. The series is arranged chronologically, with a bulk of the material dedicated to her travels for Essence magazine to South Africa to interview Nelson and Winnie Mandela in the 1990s.

The photographs provide insight into her personal life, business travels as an author and lecturer, her Ph.D. graduation, and relationships with artists, scholars, and activists, —such as being pictured with Audre Lorde, Alice Walker, Nelson and Winnie Mandela, June Jordan, M. Bahati Kuumba, Paula Gunn Allen, bell hooks, and others. These relationships are also reflected in the photographs depicting her attendance at the Black Women in the Academy Conference, International Women Playwrights Conference, and Sundance, and being pictured with the University at Buffalo’s president when she was a tenured professor. To promote her book, De Veaux visited Japan in 1988 and there are dozens of photographs which preserve that tour. Many of her photographs preserve De Veaux’s writing; her words can be found on the verso (back) of some photographs.

More personal photos include her celebrating and enjoying a West Indian Day Parade in New York (1987), pictures from Halloween, and when her mother visited De Veaux’s home in Buffalo, New York. When traveling, her partner, Loyce Stewart, often accompanied her, such as to Hawaii and South Africa. She traveled for her personal and professional life, visiting places

for vacations, public appearances, writing conferences, and lectures. Images in this series depict her travels across America as well as internationally.
