Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Non-correspondence formats dominate the records of Dillard University, which in their entirety cover approximately 5.2 linear feet. Most of the correspondence, comprising 1.2 linear feet, involves the personnel of the AMA's New York headquarters. As both Straight and Dillard became involved with the U.S. General Education Board (1928-1941) and several charitable foundations, these agencies are represented, along with the Orleans Parish School Board (1940-1941) and the Chicago Theological Seminary (1953-1954).

Correspondence also includes information concerning the controversy regarding the appointment of Albert W. Dent as university president (1941) and the success attained for the university by the Dillard Choir (1951-1952). Financial records originally included as part of correspondence have been removed and filed separately, with such removals noted in the correspondence files. However, there is much requisition information, beginning in 1928, which has been retained with the correspondence. Researchers seeking financial information should not overlook this component of the correspondence.

The non-correspondence consists almost entirely of publications, which includes university publications such as the Dillard Bulletin of course offerings (1940-1977), the Calendar of Events (1971-1980), Dillard Dialogue (1967-1974), Campus Capsules (1971-1976), Dillard Capsules (1976-1981), and student publications such as the student newspaper Courtbuillon (1941-1980) and the yearbook Le Diable Bleu (1955-1975). Other, more limited, publications are of special value, including event pamphlets from Straight University at the turn of the century, a copy of The Straight Gleaner (1925) and a student publication, Black Liberator (1970).

Photographs of Straight University, Dillard University, and Flint-Goodridge Hospital are also included. The history of the hospital is also richly detailed in these records with correspondence, financial records, and many commemorative events held to honor the facility.
