Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series has been divided into three sub-series of materials documenting Allen's personal and professional activities. Correspondence dates from 1917 and includes love letters from Allen's first wife, Dr. Alma Mary Haskins (1922), a signed letter from A. Philip Randolph asking him to write an article for his newspaper, The Messenger (1923), and a signed letter from Theodore Roosevelt soliciting suffrage for governorship for the state of New York (1924) and Allen's response. Allen's interest in furthering civil rights is revealed in the bulk of the correspondence dating the 1950s and 1960s. Of note is a copy of Allen's letter to President Eisenhower opposing segregation at the Tulane-Army football game of 1957. Allen also sent a letter to Quaker Oats inquiring about the historical background of "Aunt Jemima" (1963) and to NBC supporting their decision not to broadcast the Blue-Gray football game in Montgomery, Alabama based on the stadium's segregation policy (1963).

Other materials (1922-1976), arranged alphabetically by topic, or materials format, include materials collected by Allen. The conference materials include programs from the Annual Educational Conference, New York State Citizens Council Conference, and the Press Public Relations and Advertising Conference. The majority of conference materials come from educational conferences. Papers written by professors and students from various universities are also included. Among the collected reports is the Report of the Sub-Committee on Education and Recreation of the City-Wide Citizens' Committee on Harlem (April 1942); and the New York State Commission against Discrimination's Report of Progress (1957). Of note are reports written by Allen (1924-1953) beginning during his young adulthood.

Photographs, arranged chronologically (1919-1970), include Allen's trip to India (1961), his receipt of the YMCA Man of the Year award (1963) among other social gatherings and events.
