Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Series 3 consists of correspondence and files created in relationship to ACOA's programs and activities carried on in various African nations. It also includes collected printed items of various organizations, institutions, and agencies with specific interest and ongoing activities in the various countries. The records within this series are arranged alphabetically by country, with some countries documented by single folders while some comprising multiple boxes of material. The largest number of files focus on South Africa, but substantial holdings are also found for Algeria, Angola, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zaire.

The correspondence includes letters with leaders of liberation movements, government and colonial officials, clergy, educators, journalists, and intellectuals inside Africa. The letters in this series, many of them to/from George M. Houser, serve as a view into how ACOA interacted with individuals and organizations on the continent. They provide insight into ACOA's efforts to gather information about liberation movements and resistance campaigns, repression of activists, politics and political changes, and issues related to education and health. Numerous political and labor leaders are represented in the correspondence, including George Padmore, Kwame Nkrumah, Oliver Tambo, Kenneth Kuanda, Julius Nyerere, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Kanyama Chiume, Tom Mboya, Alan Paton, Leopold Senghor, Patrice Lumumba, Ian Gilchrist, Michael Scott, Ambrose Reeves, Ruth First, Z.K. Matthews, Walter Sisulu, Manilal Gandhi, and Joshua Nkomo. Of note are letters from George M. Houser relating activities on the part of ACOA and other organizations within the United States to bring about awareness of liberation movements to the U.S. populace and government. Also present are letters requesting aid, particularly towards education, sent by numerous individuals to ACOA.

Correspondence for each country is followed by files detailing ACOA activities and programs, collected printed material, writings, and press clippings. The files on ACOA activities detail various efforts to provide aid in areas of education and health, to political activists facing persecution, and to liberation movements. The largest portion of this series is comprised of the material collected by ACOA on the various movements, as well as on government agencies and departments, the economic situation within each country, as well as background material. These materials consist of books, pamphlets, newsletters, newspapers, posters, reports, speeches, press releases, flyers, and similar ephemera that provide a rich voice of the various movements and leaders within each country. Writings consists of speeches, reports, and news articles by ACOA members, as well as individuals and journalists within Africa. Press clippings provide insight into coverage of Africa by the U.S. and European press. A small number of photographs are also present within this series.

Following the individual country files are files related to the All-African People's Conferences in 1958-1961, the 1963 Independent African States Conference, and the Organization of African Unity, circa 1960s-1980.
