Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The bulk of the files Berry generated as the press secretary to Charles Evers mainly relate to the gubernatorial campaign in 1971. The papers document through essays, collected campaign ephemera, photographs, news clippings, and reports the history of the post-civil rights era in Mississippi and the power and opinion garnered by Charles Evers, the first African American elected to office since reconstruction (1867-1877). The materials also document the voting process in Mississippi. There is a small about of ephemera and news clippings for Evers' senatorial campaign in 1978, as well as legal briefs and documents related to lawsuits against Evers from the Internal Revenue Service for tax evasion and by Tom Ethridge, a former journalist for the Jackson-Clarion Ledger, who sued Berry and his publisher E.B. Dutton and Company for libel related to Berry's book Amazing Grace: With Charles Evers in Mississippi in 1974.
