Berry's writings include original manuscripts and typescripts for his books Amazing Grace: With Charles Evers in Mississippi (1973) and Up from the Cradle of Jazz: New Orleans Music Since World War II (1987), as well as his book reviews, editorials, and essays. Topic strengths of the manuscripts include politics and racism; voter's rights in Mississippi and Louisiana; government corruption; Charles Evers and his various campaigns; material culture of New Orleans, including jazz music and musicians and the spiritual church; censorship and television reform; violence amongst youth, crime and economics; and his trips and impressions of Central America and Nigeria. Of note are manuscripts and collected research materials for Berry's work on environmental issues in Southeast Louisiana and the targeting of civil rights leaders by the Internal Revenue Service in the 1970s. Also of note are materials related to David Duke, former Republican Louisiana State Representative, including a reply to a WWL Editorial by Phil Johnson regarding Johnson's character attack in 1989.

Berry's original manuscripts are arranged chronologically with undated items alphabetically by title, his published works are in the form of photocopies and organized generally by topic with originals placed at the end.
