Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Correspondence in the Chester Himes papers includes correspondence between Himes and various individuals, including writers, publishers, literary agents, friends, fans, researchers, and others. Also present are letters written by Himes' wife, Lesley, on his behalf later in his life. The correspondence is divided into two units: letters with publishers, literary agents, and others involved in the publication of Himes' work (boxes 1-2) and personal correspondence (boxes 3-6). This arrangement reflects how the correspondence was organized when the collection was initially organized and there is some overlap between the two units. The publisher/agency files are arranged alphabetically by name of publisher, agency, etc. and then chronologically. Personal correspondence is arranged alphabetically by individual name and then chronologically.

Prominent correspondents include: Dick Adler, Frederick William Ayer, Pearl Bailey, Lurton Blassingame, Christian Bourgios, Melba J. Boyd, Matthew J. Bruccoli, Charles R.
