Scope and Contents

This collection includes printed broadsides, correspondence, newsletters, pamphlets, and collected material of New Orleans activists Elizabeth Cousins Rogers and Walter Rogers.

Of interest is correspondence and materials related to Elizabeth Rogers and the Citizens Memorial Committee’s efforts to commemorate the contributions of the New Orleans Four, Ruby Bridges, Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, and Tessie Prevost, the 20th anniversary of New Orleans school desegregation event, and Ernest N. “Dutch” Morial as the first black mayor of New Orleans. These materials include the International Year of the Child petition, which examines the role of children in creating social change, as well as the invitation and the program for the event. Rogers also sought to get the painting by Alvena Seckar entitled “Desegregation” hung in the main branch of the New Orleans Public Library. Correspondents include Alvena Seckar, Ernest N. "Dutch" Morial, Dr. Robert Coles, and Clifton H. Johnson.

Additionally, the collection contains Pro-Labor publications as well as materials related to the bus drivers’ strike of the New Orleans Public Service, Inc. (NOPSI), and Walter Rogers' alleged beating at the hands of U. S. Postal Service employees. It also contains the obituary of Elizabeth Rogers who passed away in 1985. Organizations represented include the New Orleans Committee for Nuclear Disarmament, the Citizens' Memorial Committee, Victory Library, the E. J. Morris Senior Center, and the Libraria del Pueblo in New Orleans.
