Sidney Kaplan collection
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of a scrapbook, pasted on the first several pages of an edition of Morris' Cyclopedia, containing clippings from William Pickens' autobiography, Heir of Slaves, as it was published serially in The Congregationalist in 1911. The handscript title on the scrapbook reads "Christian Heros and Anecdotes," and the scrapbook also includes clippings from a variety of sources on an array of topics, including quotations, African American history, David Livingstone's exploration of Africa, and printed anecdotes.
Also included is a typescript poem with extensive handscript annotations. The authorship of the poem is unattributed, and the poem has two working titles, "The Saint" and "St. Somebody." No information exists to explain a connection between the scrapbook and the poem.
