Scope and Contents

The scrapbook of Pittsburgh alderman and police magistrate Harry B. Fitzgerald pertains primarily to his political career. The scrapbook consists mostly of newspaper clippings, which document his election and reelection as alderman, criminal cases brought before Fitzgerald in his capacity as alderman, Pittsburgh's Equal Rights Law and Fitzgerald's rigid enforcement thereof, and his appointment as police magistrate. Correspondence in the scrapbook includes congratulatory telegrams and letters after Fitzgerald's election victories, including several from Congressman Henry Ellenbogen. Other materials include a broadside political cartoon with Fitzgerald and Paul Jones, 1937 and 1943 certificates of election and related campaign and election ephemera, an event program for a 1949 testimonial dinner honoring William Dawson, the birth announcement for Skipper Powell (son of Hazel Scott Powell and Adam Clayton Powell), and an unidentified photograph.
