Scope and Contents

This collection of approximately 70 items contains correspondence, bulletins, newspaper clippings, programs, sample forms, questionnaires, and sermons collected by Natalie Midlo. These materials reflect her civic activism and support of civil rights and school desegregation. Several items are from esoteric groups and express anti-Semitic and racist views, support segregated schools and white supremacy, state sovereignty, and other social and political issues.

Included is an article from Good Housekeeping magazine concerning Daisy and Yolande Gabrielle and the integration of William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. Some of the groups represented in the collection are The Citizens' Council of Greater New Orleans, The John Birch Society, Paul Revere Associated Yeomen, Save Our Schools, Information Council of the Americas, Louisiana Medical Political Action Committee, Urban Era Associates, Freethinkers of America, National States Rights Party, Louisiana State Sovereignty Commission, Supreme Court Amendment League, Temple Sinai (New Orleans, Louisiana), and the South Louisiana Citizens Council. Names include: Julian B. Feibelman, Andrew Foreman, Daisy and Yolanda Gabrielle, J.D. Grey, Joseph Lewis, Mrs. Paul J. Murison, Gordon W. Peek, Leander Perez, John R. Rarick, Mary Sand, and Sergio Aracha Smith.

Also included is a speech presented by Kenneth Midlo, son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Midlo, before the National Convention of the Council of Jewish Federations, circa 1957, and a letter from Robert S. Fraser, Curator of Rare Books at Princeton University regarding a 19th century engraving that Mrs. Midlo owned. The engraving is by English engraver Robert Cruikshank and is present in the collection.

This collection documents political sentiments in New Orleans, Louisiana, and to a larger extent, the Deep South, during a time when the topics of desegregation, civil rights, state rights, and anti-Semitism were at the forefront of political and societal discussions.
