Jane T. Lemann papers

 Collection
Identifier: 214

Scope and Contents

The Jane T. Lemann papers reflect Lemann's wide civic involvement in New Orleans, particularly in areas pertaining to educational reform and student welfare.  Materials reflecting Lemann's involvement in efforts to desegregate the New Orleans Public Schools comprise the bulk of the collection.  The collection consists mostly of planning and meeting notes, reports, correspondence, collected ephemera and publications, and newsclippings.  Some materials pertain to Lemann's work with multiple committees and community organizations on school desegregation in New Orleans years in advance of 1960.  Activities documented include the provision of shoes for school children, the effort to reduce attrition among students through employing visiting teachers and implementing compulsory attendance laws, and devising strategies to improve race relations during a particularly strained period in New Orleans.

This collection was processed under a grant from the Keller Family Foundation.
