Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the typescript for an article by Christian F. Klebsattel, Principal at Emerson Institute in Mobile, Alabama, concerning the last known ship to bring slaves from Africa to the United States. The article appeared under the title "Slaves Captured in Africa in 1859 and Brought to Mobile and Sold the Same Year" in the January 1917 issue of The American Missionary. The article discusses the slave ship Clotilda (or Clotilde), which arrived in Mobile Bay in 1859 carrying approximately 110 slaves. Klebsattel's article is based on his discussion with Cudjo Lewis, one of the Africans brought to Mobile. Accompanying the typescript article are two photographs, one of Lewis and one of Aunt Zuma, another survivor from the Clotilda.
