Scope and Contents

This collection documents the career of Bogalusa, Louisiana, teacher and school administrator Jesse Cornelius Crump. It contains biographical and family data, correspondence, photographs, programs, Masonic publications, a yearbook and reunion materials for Central Memorial High School in Bogalusa, as well as a large scrapbook that contains photographs, newspaper clippings, etc. of athletic teams and activities at Central Memorial High School.

The majority of the correspondence was received by Crump from colleagues, local, state, and national  education, civic, and government officials, former students, and family upon his retirement in 1975. Biographical Note

Jesse Cornelius Crump was an educator and community leader in Bogalusa, Louisiana, for many years, serving as a teacher, counselor, and principal at two high schools in that city.

Jesse Cornelius Crump was born November 22, 1909, in Brookhaven, Mississippi, to Charles and Elnora Burns Raine Crump. He received his Bachelor's degree from Southern University in 1932, his Master's degree in Education from Atlanta University in 1951, and did further study at the University of California at Berkeley. Jesse Crump married Wilhelmina Wilson (b. March 31, 1914) on August 24, 1934. They had one daughter, Joyce.

Jesse Crump was a long-time resident of Bogalusa, Louisiana. For forty-one years, he rendered service as a teacher, counselor, and principal at Central Memorial High School (1934-1969) and Bogalusa High School (1970-1975). Crump was active in the Bethlehem Baptist Church, as well as many civic and social organizations, including the Southern University Alumni Federation, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Louisiana Education Association, the NAACP, the American Legion, and various Masonic organizations.

Jesse Cornelius Crump passed away on April 30, 1983.
