Scope and Contents

The Warren Boudreaux collection contains materials collected by Mr. Boudreaux and his brothers during their teaching careers and travels throughout Africa from 1952 to 1955. Materials include school/teaching materials, maps, printed ephemera, photographic postcards, and photographs. The postcards and photographs depict Haile Selassie and scenes in Ethiopia, Zaire (Belgian Congo), Uganda, and eastern Africa. Also present is an undated set of eight colored drawings depicting people and scenes, presumably in Ethiopia, signed by Tesfaye Chesike. Road maps of Ethiopia and Addis Ababa, published in 1974, complete the collection.

Biographical Note

Warren, Marvin, and Darryl Boudreaux were brothers from Franklin, Louisiana, who taught in the Haile Selassie Day School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 1952 to 1955.

Darryl W. Boudreaux and his younger twin brothers, Warren and Marvin, were born to Ursin and Irene Boudreaux of Franklin, Louisiana. Darryl was born in 1922 and Warren and Marvin were born in 1926. Darryl and Marvin passed away in 1986 and 1990, respectively. Darryl received a BA degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1943, and his master's degree in education from the University of Colorado in 1951. Marvin and Warren received their BS degrees from the Institute in 1948.

The school where the Boudreaux brothers taught served 1600 students as an elementary through 12th grade school. Darryl was in charge of the secondary department and taught elementary psychology to high school students. Marvin taught science to upper elementary students and Warren taught methods and mathematics in a teacher training program. Apart from their teaching, the brothers also spent time traveling in Africa to Kenya, Mozambique, Zanzibar, Uganda, the Belgian Congo, and South Africa before returning home to Louisiana.
