Scope and Contents

The papers of H. F. V. (Harry Francis Vincent) Edward consist of approximately 400 items of correspondence; 31 articles that Edward penned over a 30-year period; 14 programs from sports events, social occasions, and educational exercises; 30 pamphlets regarding Edward's work from 1916-1973; 50 photographs from Edward's internment in a German prison camp, his early sports career in England and on the continent; his work in Greece, Germany, Vietnam, and California; of note is a photograph of H.M. King George V congratulating Edward in 1922. The collection also contains by-laws, record books, athletic magazines, ration stamps and cards, business cards, notices, cartoons, postcards, a diary, and an autograph book. Included in the papers are four drafts of Edward's autobiography, a scrapbook on sports, collected newspaper clippings, as well as his sports certificates and medals.

Correspondence is arranged chronologically with the earliest in German dated 1914 and 1915. Edward's correspondents include J.E.K. Studd, W.E.B. DuBois, Herbert H. Lehman, Charles Abrams, Jacob Javits, Phau Van Phu (in French), Philip Noel-Baker, Sir Peter M. Studd, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Robert F. Kennedy.

Articles included are those that Edward wrote primarily from 1946-1970 and concern U.S. involvement in Vietnam and Cambodia, the policies of the New York State Employment Service, and housing problems encountered in northern Greece. Programs cover three periods: 1914-1918, the 1920s, and the 1960s-1970s, and include the following: events at the Ruhleben Internment Camp; the "2e Meeting International d'athletisme" of Paris, 1922; the 1926 Paulsboro, New Jersey, YMCA; and meetings and institutes of the 1960s and 1970s. Pamphlets cover 1914-1973 and include information on the Ruhleben Internment Camp, the 1920 Olympic Games, Greece, Germany, and Vietnam.

Also included are ephemera, news clippings, certificates, and medals relating to sporting events of the 1910s and 1920s; aid work in 1940s Greece and Germany; his work during the 1950s and 1960s in Vietnam; race matters from 1930s through the 1970s; and artistic matters of the 1940s.
