James Edward Bates photograph collection
Scope and Contents
The James Edward Bates Photographs include two 12" x 18" black and white photographs produced by Bates. One photograph depicts protesters at a rally in support of the Jena Six at the La Salle Parish Courthouse in Jena, Louisiana, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 21, 2008. The second depicts an African-American bus driver escorting Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, North Mississippi White Knights and National Socialist Movement members following their protest of the renaming of three Memphis parks at the Shelby County Courthouse in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, on Saturday, March 30, 2013.

Biographical Note
James Edward Bates is an award-winning photographer working in the areas of photojournalism, documentary projects, and portraiture. Bates attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was influenced by photojournalism professor Ed Wheeler and LIFE magazine photojournalist Charles Moore. Bates' work has appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines. He was named a finalist in the international 2002 Gordon Parks Photography Competition and was part of the team of journalists from The Sun Herald (Biloxi, Mississippi) that received the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. His most recent project is entitled "Passing the Torch: Documentary the 21st Century Ku Klux Klan," which has been exhibited in France, England, and Scotland.
