Scope and Contents

The papers of Alexander Louis Jackson II span the 1890s to the early 1970s and contain correspondence, biographical information and articles, family and school reunion photographs, invitations, photo copied news clippings about major Civil Rights events in the 1960s, which document the Jackson's activities as a real estate investor in Chicago, co-founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, and civic activist who was heavily involved in many civil rights and community organizations. Jackson’s involvement in notable African American organizations, including Chicago's Wabash Avenue Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), Provident Hospital, and the Chicago Defender newspaper is well documented. Also included is correspondence, photographs, and newsletters highlighting his lifetime involvement with his alma maters, Phillips Academy at Andover and Harvard. Notable correspondence includes letters from Carter Woodson, with whom Jackson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, and letters from Jackson's son William (Bill) during his time stationed in Italy at the end of World War II.
