Scope and Contents

The papers document the professional life of African American mathematician and researcher Albert Turner Bharucha-Reid and include correspondence, writings, research materials, and documentation on his involvement in professional conferences and organizations, as well as his work as a university professor spanning from the early 1950's to 1985. The papers contain general correspondence with mathematicians around the world and correspondence related to his role as editor and associate editor of several academic journals.

Papers also include drafts, notes, and calculations for Bharucha-Reid's sixty plus academic articles in mathematics, science, and computer science journals, and manuscript drafts and other materials related to books he authored and books where he served as editor.

University files consist of Bharucha-Reid's own student work from the University of Chicago, as well as papers from Wayne State University, Georgia Tech, Atlanta University, and several other universities where Bharucha-Reid served as a visiting professor or guest lecturer. These files also include materials related to grants Bharucha-Reid received from various institutions.

Biographical Note

Albert Turner Bharucha-Reid, mathematician, university professor, administrator, and researcher, worked to advance the opportunities and recognition of minorities and women in the field of mathematics.

Born Albert Turner Reid in Hampton, Virginia on November 13, 1927 to William Thaddeus Reid and Mae Elaine Beamon Reid, he formally changed his name to Albert Turner Bharucha-Reid after marrying Rodabe Phiroze Bharucha in Chicago in 1954. He graduated from George P. Phenix High School in Hampton, Virginia in 1944 and went on to attend Howard University in Washington D.C. and Hampton Institute before graduating from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1949. Bharucha-Reid took graduate courses in mathematics and held research positions at the University of Chicago and Columbia University in the early 1950's.

He began teaching at the University of Oregon in 1956 and was a fellow at the Polish Academy of Sciences from 1958-1959 before moving to Detroit, Michigan to teach at Wayne State University, where he was professor of mathematics from 1961-1981. During his time at Wayne State, Bharucha-Reid also served as associate provost and dean of graduate studies. In 1981 he moved to Atlanta, where he was professor of mathematics at Georgia Institute of Technology until 1983, when he became a visiting professor of mathematics at Atlanta University. Throughout his teaching career, Bharuch-Reid was a visiting professor at several institutions including the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Madras, India and at the Mathematics Research Center of the University of Wisconsin. He served on numerous academic organizational committees, including the Graduate Records Board, Board of Governors of the Cranbrook Institute of Science, and several American Mathematical Society committees. He traveled extensively around the world for speaking engagements and lectures until his health prevented him from doing so. In 1984, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of science from Syracuse University.

Bharucha- Reid published more than sixty peer-reviewed mathematics articles and several books, along with editing several mathematics volumes. One of his books, Elements of Theory of Markov Processes and their Applications, was translated into Russian and published in Moscow in 1969. He was the editor of theJournal of Integral Equations, an associate editor of several journals, and served on the editorial board of theJournal of Mathematical and Physical Science.

Bharucha-Reid and his wife Rodabe had two sons, Kurush Feroze Bharucha-Reid, and Rustam William Bharucha-Reid. Albert Turner Bharucha-Reid died on February 26, 1985.
