Scope and Contents

The papers of historian Gwendolyn Midlo Hall are comprised of correspondence; professional working papers, including applications, reports, resumes, and grants; professional writings, including book and chapter drafts, essays, and lectures; and research materials including articles, news clippings, interviews, notes, vital records, and publications in English, French and Spanish.  The collection includes reproductions of research materials and research notes dating from 1705-1820 and 1929-1970s, while all other material spans the years 1943-2001.

The papers have been arranged into four series.  The bulk of the collection is comprised of research materials gathered by Gwendolyn Midlo Hall in preparation for professional writings.  The file units are arranged chronologically or alphabetically by document type or chapter title depending on the series.  The series are arranged as follows:  Professional Correspondence and Papers (1964-2001); Professional Writings (1943-1989); Research Materials in English (circa 1970-2000); and Research Materials in French and Spanish (circa 1970-2000).
